WHAT IS PROPOSITION 65?

Proposition 65 mandates businesses to notify Californians about significant exposures to chemicals causing cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm. These chemicals may be present in purchased products, homes, workplaces, or released into the environment. By ensuring this information is disclosed, Proposition 65 empowers Californians to make informed choices regarding their chemical exposures.

Additionally, Proposition 65 prohibits California businesses from knowingly discharging significant amounts of listed chemicals into drinking water sources.

Proposition 65 was enacted in November 1986, approved by California voters with a 63-37 percent majority. Its official title is the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986.

WHAT TYPES OF CHEMICALS ARE ON THE PROPOSITION 65 LIST?

The list comprises naturally occurring and synthetic chemicals found in pesticides, household items, food, drugs, dyes, solvents, and more. These chemicals may be used in manufacturing, construction, or may be byproducts of chemical processes such as vehicle exhaust.

The list has expanded to approximately 900 chemicals since its initial publication in 1987 and continues to grow annually.

HOW CAN I PROTECT MYSELF?

While Proposition 65 has prompted manufacturers to adjust production methods for safer products, some items still contain listed chemicals that cannot be altered. It's crucial for consumers to be aware of potential dangers and take precautions to minimize exposure when using such items. The extent of protection varies depending on the product, location, and chemical in question.
